With backing from the Birla group of businesses, the Birla Institute of Management Technology was founded in 1988 under the auspices of the Birla Academy of Art and Culture. The business school was founded by Sarala Birla, the chairperson of the B K Birla Group of Companies, and the late Basant Kumar Birla.

The Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) is a two-year, full-time residential program approved by AICTE and MHRD, the Government of India. The programme is organized into six trimesters. The PGDM programme is rigorously created and structured on a trimester basis, in accordance with the institute's vision and objective. It encompasses all important areas of specialty offered throughout the course.
